Key Issues

The key legal issue that arose at this site was the presence of the European protected species: the great crested newt. JFA Environmental Planning collected high quality amphibian survey data and were able to provide expert advice and innovative ideas for enhancing and creating habitat for great crested newts as part of the mitigation plan included in the application for an EPSML (European Protected Species Mitigation Licence).

The licence application detailed the methodology employed for the sensitive clearance of newts from affected areas of the development to a suitable receptor area. It also incorporated the creation of some hibernacula and other habitat enhancements in order for the favourable conservation status of the local great crested newt population not to suffer as a result of the development. Natural England granted the licence in July 2011.
